Umhlanga is known for being one the KwaZulu Natal's most affluent areas, both residential and commercial, making it a popular area to live. The name Umhlanga means "place of reeds" in Zulu and is fitting given its beach access. Holidaymakers visit the area as it has an abundance of activities and holiday locations. It is located north of Durban CBD and the easy highways access makes for an easy commute to neighbouring areas such as Mount Edgecombe (West) and Durban North. (South) Much like Sandton is the financial centre hub of Johannesburg, Umhlanga has fast become the business hub of KwaZulu Natal.

Some of the popular attractions in the area are its shopping malls, namely Gateway Theatre of Shopping, which has been named the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere. This mall has everything you are looking for, from food and shops to entertainment. Umhlanga is also home to the second-tallest skyscraper in South Africa - Peal Sky, which peaks at a 183m about ground level. It offers a breathtaking outlook over the Indian ocean.

Some of KZN's most well-known estates are located in and around the Umhlanga area, as previously mentioned The Pearls of Umhlanga stand tall on the beachfront and can be seen from many different locations in the area. The renowned country estate, Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate, boasts two unique champion courses and is a mere minutes' drive from Umhlanga central.
